Colossus is a mutant from the Russian lands of Sibera who has always been popular with X-Men fans. His powers are the ability to turn his skin into metal, making him tough and very strong. His real name is Peter, and for a long time he was a member of the band of mutant X-Men trying to save the world. For some time he turned on the X-Men and fought alongside the side of Magneto and the "evil" mutants. While not as popular as Wolverine or Gambit, Colossus is deserving of his own limited series, and here is the review.
"Bloodline" opens with a masked man killing a healer in Siberia, then the scene jumps to Colossus having a nightmare. "Every time I sleep... the same dream...the same nightmare." Peter has an inner struggle from his past to battle.
The story moved quickly after the dream. A reporter in Russia is trying to write a story that will shake things up. The story is on corruption in the government. Her publisher is weary of it, and she is too. A friend acts as her double and is killed. This connects to Peter (Colossus) because the reporter is a cousin.
It seems members of Peter's family are being killed by the mysterious mased man who killer the healer in the opening.
Soon there is a link to Peter and the Russian mystique Gregory Rasputin. Rasputin is famous in Russian history. Peter's sister thinks Rasputing may have been a mutant because of his effect on people. Rasputin's story is told in the graphic novel "Bloodline" and in a well-orchestrated way. It turns out that the mysterious masked figure killing members of Colossus' family is a signature villain from the X-Men comics. This is an unexpected surprise.
While not a masterpiece, there are plenty of entertaining elements to David Hines (writer) and Jorge Lucas (artist) work. It is not the best of the X-Men graphic novels, as many negative reviews say, but allows for in-depth characterization of a key X-Men figure in Colossus. And the focus is on Colossus, which makes it a different X-Men comic book story. Since his first appearance Colossus has often been a sideline character to the bigger names of the X-Men mythos like the aforementioned Gambit and Wolverine. Usually X-Men stories move through multiple characters, as seen in the regular series and countless graphic novels, but here one hero is focused on. Bringing Colossus to life may not have been a major endeavor, but writer Hines tells a detailed and different version of the steel-skinned man.
